The $43 Cheesecake

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

So, yesterday was officially both Papa’s (My father-in-law) and Grandpa’s (my dad) birthdays. More on this later, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We spent the day strolling around NYC yesterday. Running around the city is tough work with three kids. Even with help. Katie and Mike, (our friends from Hawaii), have always made having kids easier. They are a great aunt/uncle (they’re brother and sister) set to have around. When we lived in Hawaii, they were our babysitters. They were great to have around, and frequently crashed at our place. Having them over yesterday and today was like reliving old times a little, and that counts for a lot.

I’m a big fan of using the Subway when in NYC as a way of covering ground, especially with kids. It’s a bitch getting selves, kids, stroller, etc. to the platform, but once there, it’s a straight shot onto the train. The bus, on the other hand, would be sitting there while your slow-moving-herd boarded, while other passengers watched with frothing mouths.

Kevyn, it turns out, likes the subway too.

He kept asking me to let him slide down the pole. So being a dad, I obliged, his laughter being contagious and infecting other passengers.

Lara also introduced him to the rushing wind preceeding an oncoming train.

Central park has some nice little playgrounds, where the kids can have adventures, meet new friends and explore the properties of matter, As Caelyn was wont to do. She also likes putting sand at the bottom of the slide. Just because.

Mike and Katie spent some time with their non-blood nieces and nephew as well. Honestly, you should have seen the looks on their faces when Mike and Katie walked into the apartment yesterday morning. It was priceless!

Mike and Quinlyn

The end of the evening involved dinner and tomfoolery at Dave and Busters, where the kids made a killing in tickets on some roulette type of game. Quinlyn played air hockey for the first time. And Me, Mike, Quinlyn, and Kevyn took turns blowing up aliens/monsters on various gun games.

The cap to the evening was something Papa had said earlier. Lara had called him to wish him a happy birthday, and he said something to the effect of “have a piece of cheesecake for me.” Well, this became our driving force. Find a whole cheesecake in NYC at 9:30PM. Problem being that we were tired, and it was getting late: most normal bakeries were closed by then. Everywhere else sold them by the slice, and we weren’t having any of that. So after searching Times Square for a deli or bakery with a whole cheesecake we settled on a slightly-used-but-mostly-whole cheesecake, that cost $43 after tax. Some decisions just can’t be explained.

Causes

Causes by flickr user steveevets

I don’t know when I stopped fighting for causes.

It’s almost as if this aspect of my life has followed the lyrics of Billy Joel’s “Angry Young Man.” I used to be a fiery orator, railing against this and that.

Somewhere along the way I lost my passion.

I lost my drive to be a songwriter. Lost my drive to be a professional web developer. And these are just personal things I gave up on.

In giving up on causes, I also gave up on fighting for things that matter to the people closest to me. As many of you know, Lara has Lupus. It makes her life difficult, to say the least. Today, she was having symptoms of kidney trouble, and it hit me for the first time that she’s sick. I mean, I knew it, in my head, for a long time. Unlike the string of doctors before she got her diagnosis, I never thought she was faking. But I never internalized it. I never really let myself understand exactly what that meant. I never allowed myself to look at her as a sick person.

That was a mistake. By thinking that way, I was doing the exact thing I was trying to avoid. By not admitting to myself that yes, she’s sick, I had unreasonable expectations for her. I expected a clean house, dinner, kids living through the day, etc. Even though I never said how much I expected, I still thought it.

I was wrong to think it. I had no business expecting a perfect sitcom home environment from someone who is physically incapable of providing it.

So I need to channel that frustration into another outlet. Aside from the obvious step of taking up a lot more of the household load. I need a cause.

Lara’s right. I should have been a dog.

Dogs develop psychological problems if not given a proper outlet for their energy. They need a purpose. And so do I.

So I’m going to start fighting Lupus with her. I’m going to let her teach me what I can do to support her and this cause. I’m going to practice my web development so I can throw up websites (good, standards-compliant sites) wherever needed. I’m going to leverage the power of Twitter, not only to network for myself, but to see what I can do for the cause.

Time to become the angry young man again.

New Camera

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

So we finally broke down (snicker) and bought a new digital camera, after our last one was stolen by some prick at Disney World when Lara was down in Florida for Kat’s wedding.

By the way, I hope that whoever stole our camera reads this, and I hope that someone takes naked pictures of them with that camera, and blackmails them with them later.

Anyway, we finally crossed the line from point-and-shoot to DSLR. Couldn’t be happier. We’ve decided to shoot all our pictues in RAW format. This means that the camera does no processing on them to turn them into JPEG’s. The file is a direct dump form the image sensor, leaving any processing to be done in Photoshop later. This means that:

  • We’ll have less pictures overall after the fact, but
  • We’ll have a lot more shots to choose from, since shooting in RAW saves storage space, and because the camera doesn’t have to do anything to the picture, we can shoot the next shot within a second and a half of the last one.

We’ve been drooling over the Nikon D40 for months now, and now that we have it, I feel all giddy. We’ll finally be able to take great pictures of the kids. Not that the camera makes me a better photographer or anyhting, but I’ll be able to shoot more, so the likelyhood of getting a good shot will go up.

Lara has become very interested in photography. So now that we have a bad-ass entry-level DSLR, she can practice her shooting, which is retartedly better than mine, truth be told.

So anyway, we took a few test shots today. After some Photoshop work, I posted them on Flickr for all to see. You can check them out there too.

Halloween, my padawan…

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Just a quickie. Here’s my halloween costume for this year. Yes, I used photoshop. I must thank my wife for the hard work she put into this costume. The kids got boat loads of candy. Quinlyn, and her friends Alex and Erik, were all dressed as my padawan learners (pictures to come later). I even ran into a guy I met last year on halloween who was dressed as a Sith. He said that I was his inspiration for this year. I was touched. I love being a geek, but it’s great when your geekiness is admired. :) Happy Halloween!

Just an idea for anyone thinking about getting me a christmas present this year. I’d LOVE to have this so I could tinker with it and make Caelyn follow it around the floor

Empire strikes back with Lego’s help

(Credit: The Lego Group, Lucasfilm)

Now this is more like it. Forget about those Lego iPod docks. Toys should be toys–and armed vehicles, of course. The new “Motorized Walking AT-AT” just listed in the Lego catalog fills both requirements, as seen on Boing Boing. (That’s “All-Terrain Armored Transport,” for the Star Wars-challenged among you.)
This is no ordinary remote-controlled toy, but a multi-jointed beast with a moving head and rotating laser cannons that stands a foot tall. We’re particularly fond of the dangling Luke Skywalker that’s included, because his precarious position is something we can easily relate to.
