It doesn't seem like a sensible strategy for health to me. I also wonder at vampires who interact with humans and don't use them as ghouls, thralls, or blood dolls. It all seems to reflect deep self loathing or some sort of self-concept glitch to me. That said, I think every creator gets to create their own 'verse' and what makes them unique are the little details of each one. Zombies don't work the same way in every zombie movie, for example, and that gives the movie more character. So, you have to remember if you're talking about Buffy-verse vamps, Rice-vamps, or White Wolf-vamps.
